BALTIMORE, MD — Two recently born eaglets can be viewed in their natural habitat now that the Masonville Cove urban wildlife area reopened after being closed to allow the eaglets time to fledge their nest.

The eaglets were born to the same bald eagle pair that successfully nested in Masonville Cove last year. The newborn birds were first visible in April; but to protect them, restrictions were imposed on all activities within a 600-foot radius of the nest, officials from the wildlife area announced in a news release.

Due to ongoing coronavirus concerns, visitors to the wildlife area are strongly encouraged to wear facial coverings and should maintain proper social distancing. The Masonville Cove Environmental Education Center remains closed due to COVID-19 precautions, but the opportunity to see the eaglets is now available for the first time.

Visitors who come to observe the eaglets should not approach them closely, should not chase them and should not to follow them if they fly to a different area of the site, officials said.

“We take a lot of pride in making sure we cultivate a safe and protective environment for the eaglets. We know there is a lot of interest in seeing them in their habitat," Kristen Fidler, director of harbor development for the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Port Administration, said in the news release.
