Philip Burroughs, Founder of Used Car Factory, on Philanthropy

Philip Burroughs, founder of the Used Car Factory, explains how philanthropy can help boost business.

Businesses across every sector are giving more consideration to philanthropic endeavors, taking on a more responsible role in the communities in which they operate. They're doing this to improve their standing in the community, but also out of a sense of moral obligation. Yet, those are just two of the vast benefits philanthropy can have for businesses in today's society.

Boosting Competitive Context
The Harvard Business Review recently issued a report that defined the phrase "competitive context" as the quality of the public image of a business within its community. By donating to charity, the report concludes that businesses can bring their financial objectives in line with social responsibility that helps business remain sustainable over the long term.

Greater Respect from Consumers
The internet has brought a larger degree of transparency to business and consumers do watch how businesses interact with their communities. Along those lines, they also expect a greater deal of social responsibility from their favorite brands. Those businesses that devote resources to a cause are more likely to earn a positive reputation among consumers and that means those are the brands most likely to get their consumer loyalty. Additionally, top talents in the workforce are also keeping an eye on how businesses relate to their communities. It's no longer enough to offer a good benefits package. Today's job candidates want to know what your company does for the community, either locally or globally. Those companies which don't devote resources to any cause are less likely to attract the best candidates for any position.

Philanthropic Events Provide Networking Opportunities
Every entrepreneur and business owner has peers with whom they would like to connect and attending philanthropic events can provide those opportunities. By participating in charitable causes, you can get your feet wet and begin to receive invitations to these events. While the events are intended to support a specific cause, they also provide an opportunity for socializing and networking with the powerful and connected elite in the community. Participating in philanthropic causes can give business owners and entrepreneurs a wide range of benefits. While this suggests there may be self-serving motives to philanthropy, that doesn't negate the good that donating to charity can do. For those in the community benefiting from these gifts, the motives are less important than the help that it provides. In simpler terms, philanthropy is mutually beneficial to both the donors and the recipients.
