Sarang Ahuja On Turning Down A Promotion

Not all promotions are the career change of your dreams; and you should know how to walk away from one.

A common misconception in today’s business world is that promotions are always a positive for an individual’s career. However, that can prove to be far from the truth. Sometimes, promotions only result in a marginal salary boost for the new amount of work an employee is expected to achieve. As a result, you may end up working longer hours for only a little more pay. While a promotion may look good on a resume, your job satisfaction may suffer. Of course, deciding whether or not a promotion is worth it is all contingent upon your needs and lifestyle. However, if you come to the decision that a promotion is not best choice, there are best practices for walking away.

Show Respect
While getting a promotion may not always be a good thing for you, it does speak volumes that a business would offer you a promotion of any kind to start with. That means they clearly value your work ethic and acknowledge that you bring something special to the table. So if they realize your talent and are willing to reward you for your efforts, you shouldn’t take that lightly. Take the time to express some gratitude and thank them for giving you the offer. Acknowledgement is key to building a productive relationship on both sides and open the door for future opportunities.

Respectfully Explain Why
Parse out your reasons for declining an offer. Whether you’re not sure about the pay raise or underestimated the workload, take the time to explain thoroughly why you are declining their offer. Do not passively decline a serious offer made by your business. Relay out your full concerns, and both sides should be able to come to a professional understanding. Additionally, having a conversation like this may even cause your business to reevaluate the level of compensation they are offering and come back with a better raise.

Be Confident/Leave The Door Open
What you want to make sure you do, above all else, is to remain firm with your decision. If you decline a promotion, your employer may want to sweet talk you into rebuffing your decision to meet their needs. Ensure that you stand firm on your decision, while at the same time expressing interest in future opportunities. Know what you want out of a promotion, and don’t settle for anything that you have qualms about.

There’s a lot of information out there about catching your boss’s attention and earning a promotion. However, this can sometimes go awry. If it does, know what your time is worth and recognize when you might need to walk away from a new opportunity.
