Shooting Near UMD Medical Center: Police Say Breakup Was Involved

BALTIMORE, MD — Police said the man charged with attempted murder in a shooting outside the University of Maryland Medical Center Monday morning was acquainted with his victim. Charging documents published by The Baltimore Sun on Tuesday revealed the suspected gunman and his victim had been in an "intimate relationship" that ended.
"I want him dead," Jamar Haughton, 26, who has been charged in the shooting, told police, according to documents obtained by The Baltimore Sun. "I wanted to kill him."
Haughton, of the 900 block of Lemmon Street, told police that after dating for a time, the couple separated. Police said Haughton wanted closure and was "upset" the other man "left him for a female," according to charging documents.

"I shot him in the eye and if he doesn't die, I won't stop," Haughton allegedly said.
Police said the 24-year-old victim was shot on the right side of the face and right buttocks in the 600 block of Redwood Street, near the University of Maryland Medical Center, at 7:15 a.m. on Monday, Feb. 4.

Private EMTs in the area rendered aid until the victim was taken to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center for further treatment, police said in charging documents.

The victim is a "valuable member of the University of Maryland School of Medicine community," according to Dr. Thomas Scalea, physician in chief for the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
Although Scalea said the shooting victim was "critically ill" and on life support Monday morning, police later reported his condition was upgraded to stable.
According to WJZ, Haughton was taken into custody after University of Maryland police officers chased him across Martin Luther King Boulevard.
Haughton is being held without bail, according to court records, which also show he had a peace order filed against him in December.

Haughton worked in facilities for the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine but has since been fired, WBAL reported.
He has been charged with 10 offenses:
- Attempted first-degree murder
- Attempted second-degree murder
- First-degree assault
- Second-degree assault
- Using a firearm in a felony crime
- Having a loaded handgun on his person
- Having a handgun on his person
- Having a stolen firearm
- Reckless endangerment
- Discharging a firearm
According to charging documents, the black Beretta 9 mm handgun recovered from Haughton's person had been reported stolen from Anne Arundel County.
