6 Children Died in Northeast Baltimore House Fire, 4 Family Members Escaped: Report

A GoFundMe account has been set up to help the family with expenses after house fire off Belair Road.

BALTIMORE, MD — Six children died when a house fire tore through their home in northeast Baltimore Thursday morning. Their mother and three siblings escaped and were hospitalized, officials said, and their father was at work.

When fire broke out at the three-story home in the 4200 block of Springwood Avenue after midnight, the house collapsed.

The woman whose home and family were involved is a special assistant to Congressman Elijah Cummings in his Catonsville office and has worked for him for 11 years, according to WJZ.

Cummings was on the verge of tears as he conducted interviews Thursday about the incident, stating that Kate Malone and her family, which included nine children, were like a part of his and his staff's family.

Her husband was reportedly at work at the time of the fire.

Malone as well as her 4 and 5-year-old sons were in critical condition at the hospital Thursday evening, according to CNN. The 8-year-old daughter reportedly rescued the two boys and brought them to safety.

The 8-year-old was released from the hospital by Thursday evening, WBAL reported.

The six children who remained unaccounted for were believed to have died. Excavation equipment was brought to the scene to get through the wreckage, and the six children's bodies were recovered by the end of the day — two on the third floor, two on the second floor and one in a crib, according to WBAL, which reported the youths who perished ranged from 8 months to 11 years old.
