Snowfall Estimates Released For Winter Storm Targeting MD

A quick-moving winter storm is forecast to bring up to an inch of snow to the Baltimore region starting Tuesday night, which could result in icy roads and dangerous road conditions for area commuters.

Meteorologists are tracking the storm as it moves east into colder air and toward the mid-Atlantic coast, according to the latest AccuWeather forecast. A widespread coating of snow is forecast through Maryland, Virginia and Delaware.

While snowfall totals are expected to be lower than recent storms, cities like Baltimore and Washington, D.C. could see up to an inch late Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, AccuWeather forecasters said.

Travel disruptions and refreezing roads also remain concerns, prompting the National Weather Service to issue a winter commuting hazard for Wednesday morning.

NWS forecasters also predicted similar timing for possible snowfall in a hazardous weather outlook issued Tuesday.

"A light accumulation of snow is possible this evening through early Wednesday morning. If this threat materializes, there may be travel disruptions," the National Weather Service wrote.

Forecasters said any potential snowfall could create hazards for area commuters Wednesday morning.

"If commuting Wednesday morning, be aware of the possibility of significant travel disruptions," NWS forecasters said. "Plan ahead by allowing for extra travel time, and consider using public transportation and telework options."

Looking ahead, an Arctic front may bring snow showers and gusty winds to the Baltimore region on Friday. Following this front, dangerously cold wind chills are likely during the overnight and morning hours Friday night through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service.

Forecasters said snow showers and snow squalls could develop along and ahead of the front, including during the Friday morning and evening commutes.

"The Arctic front may also cause damaging winds and power outages late Friday night into Saturday, gale to storm force winds over the waters, and freezing spray over ice-free waters," the National Weather Service wrote.

Tuesday Night: Snow showers likely, mainly between midnight and 4am. Patchy fog after 11pm. Otherwise, cloudy, with a low around 23. Calm wind becoming north around 6 mph after midnight. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Wednesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 32. North wind around 9 mph.

Wednesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 15. North wind 3 to 7 mph.

Thursday: Sunny, with a high near 30. Northwest wind 6 to 9 mph.

Thursday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 15.

Friday: A chance of snow. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 34. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 17.

Saturday: Sunny, with a high near 25. Blustery.
