Target Closing One Baltimore Store

The national retail chain is shuttering 12 under-performing locations across the country, including one Baltimore store.

BALTIMORE, MD — Target is shutting down 12 of its under-performing stores, including one location in Baltimore City. Officials for the national retail chain began telling affected employees about the closings Monday.

The Baltimore store that is on the chopping block is located at 3201 Tioga Parkway near the Mondawmin Mall.

Other stores to be shut down in the latest round of closures included locations in Michigan, Kansas, Texas and Florida. The final day for the soon-to-be-closed locations will be Feb. 3, the report added.

A company spokeswoman told the Star-Tribune that a "rigorous process" is used to determine which stores are closed or moved. In general, Target stores that rack up several years of declining profitability are the ones that are shuttered, she added.

In its previous fiscal year, Target shut down five stores, and the retailer closed 13 stores the year before that.

The closings come on the heels of the company announcing that it was opening a dozen small-format stores, including locations in Philadelphia, New York and Chicago, among other areas. By the end of the year, Target will have opened 32 new stores, with 35 locations set to open in 2018.
