Teen Arrested In Connection With Baltimore PD Employee Assault

Law enforcement arrested a 15-year-old boy Monday in connection with an assault on a Muslim civilian police employee, according to reports.

BALTIMORE, MD — Baltimore police arrested a 15-year-old boy Monday in connection with an assault on a Baltimore Police Department civilian employee, according to reports. The boy, who was not named, is the first of three suspects to be arrested.

The boy was arrested by the Warrant Apprehension Task Force on Monday in Columbia. He is
charged with first-degree assault and robbery after a July 24 incident where surveillance video captured him and two others assaulting a Baltimore Police Department lab technician, WBAL reported.

Outrage prompted community members to share leads with investigators, and "information poured in," a Baltimore police major told the TV station; he said the arrest was the "direct result" of input from the public.

The assault happened on Albemarle Street in East Baltimore. The Council on American-Islamic Relations joined police and Muslim community leaders last week in condemning the assault. In a release sent by CAIR, the victim was described as a 59-year-old Muslim male dressed in Islamic attire.

Given the victim's attire, CAIR Director of Maryland Outreach Zainab Chaudry said it's possible he may have been returning from a morning prayer service.

In a statement issued through CAIR, the victim said, “I’m glad that the suspect is in custody so no one else is hurt. From my personal point of view, as a Muslim guided by my faith, I forgive them. Law enforcement is handling the case, and justice will run its course. They will have to face consequences, but it’s very important for them to get the help they need to become productive citizens of Baltimore.”

The organization is offering a $1,000 reward for information about the assault leading to arrests and convictions. ATF Baltimore, the FBI and Crime Stoppers were also offering a $32,000 reward for information.

Police are still seeking two additional suspects in the assault. Anyone with information should call 866-7LOCKUP.
