SCOTLAND, MD — A Maryland State Police helicopter flew an injured woman from a cruise ship in the Chesapeake Bay to a hospital in Prince George’s County Sunday night, officials said.

The 960-foot Carnival Legend was about 7 miles east of Point Lookout off the coast of St. Mary's County in southern Maryland near the Maryland-Virginia line when rescuers responded, a state police news release said.

The U.S. Coast Guard – Sector Baltimore called the MSP Aviation Command requesting the medevac helicopter for the injured passenger. The cruise ship, which departed Baltimore around 5:40 p.m., was en route to Nassau in the Bahamas when the 68-year-old woman was hurt in a fall.

The woman was secured in and hoisted with the responder about 50 feet from the deck of the ship into the aircraft.

The patient was then flown to the University of Maryland Capital Regional Medical Center in Largo for treatment.
