Oil Tanker Flips On I-83, Prompting Hazmat Response: Officials
interstate 83 has reopened after a crash that triggered a hazardous materials response near Coldspring Lane.

BALTIMORE, MD — An oil tanker carrying heating oil overturned on Interstate 83 on Tuesday morning, officials said, closing the road and drawing local, state and federal officials to investigate. Emergency management personnel responded to check the Jones Falls and harbor for leaked oil after the crash, which occurred on I-83 north between the Northern Parkway and Coldspring Lane exits before 8:40 a.m.
The crash had cleared before 11:50 a.m., according to the Baltimore City Department of Transportation.
A fire boat and hazardous materials teams had deployed to check for leaked oil. No health hazards were found, officials reported.

More than 2,500 gallons of heating oil leaked into the Jones Falls from the Carroll Fuel truck, according to WJZ, which reported environmental officials vacuumed the oil out of the water and installed barriers to near Pier 6 to prevent it from reaching the Inner Harbor.
