The company named a new president in June, while Plank has remained the CEO of the company he founded in 2003.

Under Armour is a "great story of a company that grew from a basement operation into a powerhouse in a relatively short time, and Kevin Plank deserves much of the credit for that," according to 24/7 Wall St. "Yet sometimes the founder of a company is not the best captain of the ship when navigating choppy waters."

As it has grown, Under Armour has faced pressure from Nike and Adidas, according to 24/7 Wall St.

In addition, Plank drew criticism from athletes who had previously supported his company after he made positive statements about the country's new president. Plank had been selected to sit on the American Manufacturing Council, a group convened by President Donald Trump, whom he hailed as "pro-business" and "a real asset for our country."
