BALTIMORE, MD — President Donald Trump was in Baltimore Thursday at a Republican retreat, where he addressed lawmakers at the Marriott Waterfront hotel in Harbor East. His remarks ran from about 8 to 9 p.m.

"We're going to fight for the future of cities like Baltimore that have been destroyed by decades of failed and corrupt rule," Trump said near the end of his speech. That was met with applause. He said the left-wing agenda was undermining law enforcement and devastating American cities.

"We're going to have to step in and do something about it because we can't allow that to happen to our great cities," Trump said. "These are our great American cities, and they're an embarrassment what the Democrats have let happen. Republicans want to rebuild our inner cities and provide a future of limitless opportunity for all Americans."

Trump's visit prompted a traffic alert from the Baltimore City Department of Transportation, which advised people to avoid a chunk of downtown from 4 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. Major delays are expected south of Baltimore Street. Rolling closures are possible, and officers will be out directing traffic, including pedestrians heading to Camden Yards for the Orioles-Dodgers game at 7:15 p.m.

At 4 p.m. a rally was planned to protest Trump, who issued a series of tweets this summer directed at Congressman Elijah Cummings, a Democrat who represents Baltimore and who is chair of the House Oversight and Reform Committee overseeing multiple investigations into the president. In the Twitter tirade, Trump said Baltimore was a "very dangerous and filthy place" where "no human being would want to live."

Organizers of the "Trump Out of Baltimore!" rally said they planned to take a stand against racism and white supremacy at the Christopher Columbus monument at South President Street at Eastern Avenue from 4 to 5:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 12. Some said they would remain there as the president leaves.

The rally downtown Thursday was hosted by the People's Power Assembly with support from multiple other organizations, including ICE Out of Baltimore, Youth Against War & Racism, Baltimore Welcoming Committee and Friends of Latin America. It is one of three demonstrations planned — one Thursday, another Friday and a third Saturday — in protest of the president and his policies.
