Will MD Get Snow This Weekend? See Chances, Latest Forecast

Forecasters are monitoring an incoming winter storm that could potentially bring snow to Maryland and a large area of the northeastern United States this weekend.

Ahead of the system, residents of the Baltimore area should keep their umbrellas at the ready due to multiple chances of rain in the coming days.

According to the National Weather Service, scattered showers are possible on Wednesday afternoon, mainly between 2 and 5 p.m. Another round of rain is possible Thursday afternoon and evening, with precipitation likely arriving in the Baltimore area around dinner time, forecasters with CBS Baltimore wrote.

"A steadier rain is likely late Thursday night into Friday morning. Right now, the heaviest of the rain may exit just before the morning commute Friday, but we'll keep an eye on it, just in case the timeline changes," CBS Baltimore forecasters said.

Conditions will remain dry Friday night into Saturday ahead of the predicted coastal storm, which could move into the region on Sunday.

"Sunday is very uncertain at this point. Rain could be heavy or change to accumulating snow with temperatures holding in the 30s," The Washington Post's Capital Weather Gang wrote. "Or there could just be periods of lighter rain with warmer highs near or above 40. It all depends on the track and intensity of a low-pressure center passing to our south and potentially intensifying near the coast."

According to the latest forecast by AccuWeather, Sunday's storm situation is "complicated" and is not certain to bring snow to the big cities along the Interstate 95 corridor.

Whether or not the Baltimore region sees snow on Sunday depends largely on the amount of cold air in the atmosphere, which is critical for snow to survive the trip to the ground. Another factor to consider is the storm's track.

"If the storm travels well inland of the coast, it will pull too much warm air into the I-95 zone for snow and might even make it too warm for an all-out snowstorm from north and west of I-95 to the Appalachians," AccuWeather forecasters wrote.

As of Wednesday, the National Weather Service predicts a 60 percent chance of a rain/snow mix in the Baltimore region on Sunday, followed by a 50 percent chance of snow on Sunday night. Snow chances continue Monday, though the likelihood is lower.

"If the storm does come to fruition, it could be rather impactful, (or it) could also be a swing and a miss," NWS forecasters said. "Time will tell."

Wednesday: A chance of rain, mainly between 3pm and 5pm. Cloudy, with a high near 52. Calm wind becoming southeast around 5 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Wednesday Night: Patchy fog after 1am. Otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a low around 40. Southwest wind around 6 mph becoming calm in the evening.

Thursday: Rain, mainly after 1pm. Patchy fog before 9am. High near 45. East wind 3 to 8 mph. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New precipitation amounts between a tenth and quarter of an inch possible.

Thursday Night: Rain. Low around 40. East wind 5 to 7 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New precipitation amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Friday: Rain, mainly before 1pm. High near 50. East wind 5 to 7 mph becoming west in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%.

Friday Night: Partly cloudy, with a low around 39.

Saturday: Partly sunny, with a high near 53.

Saturday Night: A chance of rain after 1am. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 34. Chance of precipitation is 40%.

Sunday: Rain likely before 1pm, then rain and snow likely. Mostly cloudy, with a high near 41. Chance of precipitation is 60%.
