ABINGDON, MD — Investigators credit firefighters with preventing an attic blaze at an Abingdon townhouse from spreading to adjacent homes. Nobody was injured, and there was approximately $125,000 in damage, according to the fire marshal.

The homeowners in the 3800 block of Swift Run Drive discovered the fire at 1:50 a.m. Thursday, and about 40 firefighters worked to bring the fire under control in 20 minutes, officials said.

When they arrived, Abingdon firefighters said they saw smoke showing from one side of the end-of-group home and fire coming from another.

The Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company reported it sent an engine, tower and two chiefs to the scene, where the engine handled roof work.

Investigators estimated $75,000 in damage to the structure, while about $50,000 worth of items inside were lost.

Although there were sprinklers in the home, they were not in the attic, where the fire began, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal. The cause remains under investigation.
