Murder Outside Edgewood High School Related To Drugs: Sheriff

Two teens have been charged in the shooting death of Thailek Jacob Willis,​ 19, in the Edgewood High School parking lot, officials say.

EDGEWOOD, MD — Two teens have been charged in connection with the shooting death of a 19-year-old man found in the parking lot of Edgewood High School last week, officials said. The victim was shot in a drug deal gone awry, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

Thailek Jacob Willis, 19, of Edgewood, was shot Friday night outside Edgewood High School in the 2400 block of Willoughby Beach Road, officials said.

According to investigators, Willis had driven there for a drug deal.

When he drove up, two teens armed with handguns approached him and announced a robbery, officials said.

As Willis tried to drive away, authorities reported both teens fired and one round hit and killed him.

Yasin Wallace Powell, 16, and Jaylin Jerome Brown, 15, both of Edgewood, have been charged as adults with first and second-degree murder, armed robbery, first-degree assault and related charges, officials said.

Deputies from the southern precinct were called at 9:19 p.m. on Friday for a report of a shooting and found the victim in his car in the Edgewood High School parking lot.

Willis had been shot once in the upper body, according to the sheriff's office.

The Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company took Willis to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, where he was later pronounced deceased, officials reported.

Authorities said Powell and Brown were arrested on Monday, Aug. 6, without incident.

Both are being held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center.
