Three residents died, two people were injured, three escaped without injuries and one person was not at home at the time of the fire, according to Geraci.

One victim remains hospitalized at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, authorities reported on Thursday, May 16.

Investigators said they were treating the probe of the fire as a criminal investigation.

Nine rooms were set up for people to live in at the residence, which was not inspected as would have been required by the code if it were operating as a boarding house, Geraci said.

"We're running a fire investigation, and we're looking at the code side as well," he reported at a press conference on May 9. "It's not licensed; it's not documented; it hasn't had any inspections."

The Office of the State Fire Marshal, the Harford County Sheriff's Office and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives are conducting the investigation.
