5 Heat-Related Emergencies in Harford County on Monday, Officials Say

Soaring temperatures have been keeping first responders busy since the weekend.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — First responders have been called to eight heat-related emergencies since Saturday afternoon in Harford County, according to Jenn Chenworth, spokeswoman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association. Those involved were treated for conditions that were not believed to be life-threatening, she said. Seven people were taken to local hospitals, while one refused treatment.

Officials advise people to stay hydrated and out of the heat as much as possible to avoid heat-related emergencies. Those who must be outside should drink water before, during and after activity; wear loose-fitting, light clothing; and take frequent breaks.

Five of the heat-related emergency calls came on Monday, when temperatures soared in the high 90s—and above 105 degrees on the heat index. In fact, on Monday, temperatures at BWI hit 100 degrees for the first time since 2012; the record triple-digit temp was also reached there in 2010, the National Weather Service reported.
