Arrest Made In Bel Air Basketball Court Stabbing: Police

Police in Bel Air said that a man has been taken into custody after a stabbing over the weekend during a basketball game.

BEL AIR, MD — Police said that a warrant has been issued for a man connected to the stabbing over the weekend on the basketball court between Bel Air Middle and Bel Air High schools. The warrant charges the man with multiple offenses, according to the Bel Air Police Department.

Moniyu Brian Stokes, 22, of Baltimore, was arrested, police reported Wednesday, June 26.

He will be charged with "various crimes connected to his involvement in the stabbing that occurred...at the basketball courts at the Bel Air Middle/High schools," Det. Sgt. Henry Marchesani of the Bel Air Police Department said.

Court records show Stokes has been charged with first-degree assault, second-degree assault, reckless endangerment and having a dangerous weapon with intent to injure. He was arrested Wednesday and was being held without bail pending a bail review hearing in Harford County District Court Thursday, June 27.

Police said the charges stemmed from an assault over the weekend. A 22-year-old Bel Air man was stabbed in the back of his upper left arm while playing basketball at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 23. He was part of a group of young adults playing at the basketball court at 99 Idlewild Street when a dispute escalated and got physical, according to officials.

After stabbing the Bel Air man, authorities allege Stokes got into a vehicle and left.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office assisted with the investigation, Bel Air police said.
