Bel Air Ambulance Crashes On New Jersey Interstate

The ambulance was not transporting any patients at the time of the collision and was reportedly en route for repairs.

BEL AIR, MD — An ambulance from Bel Air was involved in a crash this week in New Jersey. Officials said the collision happened as the vehicle was en route to be repaired from a crash that happened the week before.

Donald Hannah, 74, of Felton, Delaware, had been driving the ambulance at the time of the crash around 3:49 p.m. on Wednesday, according to the Asbury Park Press, a newspaper in New Jersey.

In the crash along Interstate 195 in New Jersey, the newspaper reported the Bel Air ambulance went into the woods, and a Hyundai overturned.

The driver of the Hyundai sustained injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, while the ambulance driver was uninjured, the paper reported.

The Hyundai driver, a 24-year-old Georgia man, was cited for careless driving, New Jersey State Police told The Aegis.

At the time of the collision, the ambulance was on its way to the repair shop in New Jersey, according to Rich Gardiner of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company.

Last week, it had been responding to a wreck near Campus Hills when the ambulance itself became involved in a crash, Gardiner told Patch. The emergency vehicle ended up sliding on the ice into a tree, damaging its rear.

On Valentine's Day. Ambulance 396 was on the way to the factory to get body work done to repair damage from the incident when the more recent crash occurred out of state, Gardiner said. The driver behind the wheel of the ambulance that day was contracted through the sales company, according to Gardiner.

He said that the turn of events was abnormal.

"Two collisions with the same vehicle in such a short period of time is very uncommon," Gardiner said.

There are seven ambulances in the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company's fleet, and operations were not expected to be impacted.

Less than eight hours after the ambulance crash, another crash was reported on the same stretch of Interstate 195 in Jackson, New Jersey; in that one, two people died.
