Bel Air Goes Back To School: Advisory, Video, Program Restored

Schools in Harford County began on Tuesday, Sept. 5.

BEL AIR, MD - Tuesday was the first day of school for students in Harford County and across Maryland, where Gov. Larry Hogan issued an order that classes may not begin until after Labor Day.

Everyone from drivers to pedestrians is impacted by the start of the academic year, and police issued an advisory for the community as the kiddos head back. Namely, stay alert.

"Bel Air PD is reminding everyone that schools are opening on Tuesday, Sept. 5," the Bel Air Police Department said in a statement. "Motorists, please exercise caution for children who are walkers or bike riders AND our school crossing guards." Here are more tips for safety around school.

Harford County Public Schools captured some students arriving for the first day of school:

County Executive Barry Glassman and Fox 45 were at Roye-Williams Elementary School in Havre de Grace for the big first day.

Things to look forward to for 2017-2018 include the return of Harford Glen to the school curriculum for fifth grade students. The environmental center's overnight program had been on hiatus for the past couple of years due to budgetary constraints, The Aegis reported, noting Harford County Public Schools included more than $270,000 toward Harford Glen for FY 2018.

Students in the public school system aren't the only ones celebrating the beginning of the academic year and all of its newness.

Harford Community College started back to school last Monday, Aug. 28.
