Livability, which ranks towns across America, took note of Bel Air's history, community activities.

So do the folks at Livability, which ranks the best small towns annually through researching amenities, education, sustainability, transportation, housing and the economy.
It released its ”Top 100 Best Small Town” list on Monday, and Bel Air ranked 42.

Founded in 1780, Bel Air has 25 homes and buildings from the 18th and 19th centuries, including an entire Bel Air Courthouse Historic District and Hartford Furnace Historic District. The town today has amenities like Hartford Mall as well as five neighborhood parks, and residents are proud of a thriving arts community with theater, art galleries, concerts and festivals. A 182-bed Upper Chesapeake Medical Center tends to the area’s health needs.

The top 10 towns on the list were Lebanon, N.H.; Los Alamos, N.M.; Durango, Colo.; St. Augustine, Fla.; Bar Harbor, Maine; Louisville, Colo.; Hood River, Ore.; Spearfish, S.D.; Sebastopol, Calif.; and Port Angeles, Wash.
