Bel Air Paramedic Killed in Line of Duty

A paramedic with the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company was killed in the line of duty Tuesday, according to Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association spokesman Rich Gardiner.

The paramedic was responding to a motorist who had run into a ditch near the 300 block of Patterson Mill Road at approximately 1:50 p.m., Gardiner said.

He has been identified as 29-year-old Erik Steciak by Harford County Emergency Management.

The motorist went to a nearby residence, and the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company employed a 2014 Chevrolet Silverado with four-wheel drive and a snow plow to respond due to weather and driveway conditions, according to Gardiner.

“As the utility vehicle proceeded down the driveway, it began to slide,” Gardiner said in a statement.

“At some point during the slide, a member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, a paramedic provider, was struck by the utility,” Gardiner said. “He was treated at the scene and transported in grave condition to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where he later succumbed to his injuries.”

Steciak was a paid member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, according to Gardiner.
