ANNAPOLIS, MD — A Harford County lawmaker has been appointed to serve as senior advisor to Gov. Larry Hogan. The governor selected Delegate Andrew Cassilly for the role.

Cassilly has been a member of the House of Delegates since 2015. He represents District 35B, which includes Harford and Cecil counties. To become senior advisor in the Hogan administration, he is giving up his seat.

"It is of course a difficult decision to leave the General Assembly, but I could not pass up the opportunity to help advance the governor's bold agenda for Maryland," Cassilly said in a statement. "I want to thank the governor for this exciting opportunity, and I look forward to joining his team as we prepare for the legislative session."

Cassilly will succeed Keiffer J. Mitchell Jr., who became the governor's new chief legislative officer.

"Andrew Cassilly has an exceptional record of service to the State of Maryland, from his tenure in the Maryland National Guard to his years of leadership in Maryland public schools and the House of Delegates," Hogan said.

Cassilly works for Harford County Public Schools as the assistant supervisor for innovative partnerships. For 28 years, he has been employed by the school system — as coach, teacher, administrator and manager of operations, according to a statement from the governor's office.

"His strong judgement and wealth of expertise on education, environmental and transportation issues will be invaluable to our team, especially during the upcoming legislative session," Hogan said.

Cassilly serves on the Ways and Means Committee and was previously on the Environment and Transportation Committee, Regional Revitalization Workgroup, Veterans and Waterman Caucus, and the Harford County Economic Advisory Board, among others. He has a master’s degree from Loyola College in administrative management and a bachelor’s degree from Millersville University in industrial technology.
