DWI Checkpoint In Harford County Announced

Drive sober or get pulled over; the Harford County Sheriff's Office is conducting a DWI checkpoint this weekend.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — There will be a sobriety checkpoint on Friday in Harford County, officials say. During the checkpoint, deputies will be on the lookout for those driving while intoxicated.

The Harford County Sheriff's Office announced that the checkpoint will take place the evening of Friday, Dec. 1. The location of the initiative was not disclosed.

The legal blood alcohol concentration is .08 percent in Maryland. According to police, it can cost more than $10,000 for a DUI, which may result in fines, DUI classes, fees and license suspensions.

The checkpoint comes at the start of a festive weekend in Harford County, where Havre de Grace hosts its parade and tree lighting on Friday night; Aberdeen presents its Christmas Street celebration on Saturday; and Bel Air welcomes the holidays with a concert, parade and tree lighting on Sunday.

By law, authorities must announce sobriety checkpoints. A Supreme Court case in 1990 determined citizens' rights against unlawful search and seizure are not violated if checkpoints are publicized in advance.
