Fan Caused Weekend House Fire in Bel Air: Fire Marshal

The Office of the State Fire Marshal said the fire caused $50,000 in damage.

A neighbor discovered a house fire Saturday afternoon off MD Route 924, according to the Office of the State Fire Marshal, which reported the blaze required dozens of firefighters to respond and caused $50,000 in damage.

At 2:51 p.m. on Saturday, a neighbor reported there was a fire in the house at 1 Spring Drive, according to the fire marshal. When the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company arrived, crews reported there were flames through the roof of the residence.

Approximately 50 firefighters—from Bel Air, Joppa-Magnolia, Kingsville, Abingdon and Fallston—responded, bringing the blaze under control within 45 minutes, the fire marshal reported.

Firefighters were able to contain most of the fire to the attic, according to the report.

Through investigation, the fire marshal traced the origin of the fire to an electrical/mechanical malfunction in the master bathroom ceiling fan.

As a result of the blaze, there was $25,000 in structural damage, and $25,000 worth of items in the home were lost as well, according to the report.

There was extensive smoke, soot and water damage in the bedrooms, the report said.

The residents were not home at the time of the fire, the report said.
