Before Fatal Edgewood Crash, Medical Emergency: Report
Maryland State Police reportedly said that driver error, speed contributed to deadly crash Saturday on Route 40.

EDGEWOOD, MD — Officials say one person died in a crash in Edgewood Saturday morning.
Before 10:30 a.m., Abingdon Fire Company reported that US 40/Pulaski Highway was closed at West Shore Drive because of a serious crash.
Joseph Alphonse Ludwig had been stopped at a red light on Pulaski Highway when his car was hit from behind by a woman who had a seizure while driving and accelerated, according to WBAL. Her car went across the center line and hit a minivan head-on, while his vehicle traveled onto the shoulder, the TV station reported.

Multiple people were injured, including one person in grave condition, according to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, which sent a medic unit to the crash site to assist.

Ludwig, who had been driving a Fiat, was declared dead at the scene on westbound Route 40, according to The Aegis, while the woman driving the Dodge Journey who had the medical emergency and the Toyota Sequoia occupants she hit on eastbound Route 40 were taken to local hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
By 1:15 p.m., the road had reopened.
