Crews Battle Field Fires Near MD 543
Harford County emergency personnel say more than five fire companies were needed to contain blaze.

Several fire companies were required to put out fires in the woods of Harford County Wednesday afternoon near MD 543, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association.

At approximately 3 p.m., crews from Bel Air, Darlington and Whiteford were at the scene of five separate field fires and a tractor fire north of Slade Lane on MD 543, Gardiner said. By 4 p.m., he said seven fire companies were at the scene.

MD 543 was closed between Conowingo and Slade during the firefighting operations, and it reopened at approximately 4:30 p.m., according to Gardiner.
Officials say the blazes began when a farmer, unaware of the situation, was working in the field.

The fire was ruled accidental and attributed to farming activities, Gardiner reported.
