Fields Blaze in Harford County: PHOTOS

Rural setting required crews to take extra measures to contain fire, Harford emergency officials report.

At least seven fire companies worked to put out various blazes that cropped up off MD 543 in Harford County Wednesday afternoon, according to Harford County emergency personnel.

Firefighters cut lines into the ground to contain the blaze and stop it from spreading beween 3 and 4 p.m., according to Rich Gardiner of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company.

The fire was ruled accidental due to farming activities, Gardiner reported.

He noted that it is hard work for first responders to contain fire in rural conditions.

Crew members must carry water on their backs and drag hoses—which often get snagged—through fields, Gardiner said.
