Fire Damages Townhouse Under Renovation, Neighboring Home: Official

A townhouse under renovation and a neighboring home were damaged by a fire sparked by an employee grinding bolts on a toilet, officials say.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — A vacant townhouse being renovated caught fire Tuesday afternoon. According to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, the fire broke out shortly after 3:30 p.m. at 804 Kingston Court in Edgewood.

The two-story, middle-of-the-group townhouse sustained an estimated $50,000 in damage. It took approximately 25 firefighters 10 minutes to reign in the fire, which was discovered in the bathroom by an employee of the renovation company.

According to the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company, an employee had installed a toilet and ground metal bolts, which caused sparks to shoot behind the wall. About 15 minutes later, the employee saw smoke and attempted to put out the fire, but the fire spread too quickly and that's when he called 911. The fire was contained to the bathroom, but damage also occurred to the neighbor's home at 806 Kingston Court and the residents there were displaced
