Fire Marshal: Abingdon Walmart Blaze Was Accidental

The fire in the garden center broke out Tuesday night, Maryland state fire marshal reported.

An electrical malfunction caused a fire in the Constant Friendship Walmart on Tuesday night, the Office of the State Fire Marshal reported. The blaze caused $10,000 in structural damage, according to the report.

At 10:37 p.m. on Tuesday, an employee in the Walmart at 401 Constant Friendship Boulevard in Abingdon discovered the fire in the Walmart’s garden center, the report said.

The sprinkler inside the garden center went off, and approximately 30 firefighters—from Abingdon, APG, Bel Air and Joppa-Magnolia—responded and brought the blaze under control within half and hour, the fire marshal reported.

An internal electrical failure with a ceiling cord reel caused the blaze, according to the fire marshal, who ruled the fire accidental.

Due to the fire, there was approximately $10,000 in structural damage to the Walmart, the report said. None of the items in the garden center was damaged, according to the fire marshal’s report.
