Firefighter Funeral Closes Hickory Avenue: Police

Traffic alert: Memorial service for a member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company will result in road closure Thursday.

BEL AIR, MD — Due to a memorial service for a member of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company, detours will be in effect on South Hickory Avenue on Thursday morning.

South Hickory Avenue will be closed between Courtland Place and Churchville Road from approximately 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday, May 19, according to the Bel Air Police Department.

Officials anticipate a significant amount of pedestrian traffic in the area of the Bel Air Volunteer Fire Company's main station for the services honoring Firefighter Tyler Smith.

Smith died May 14 and had served several fire companies in the area, including Bel Air, Whiteford and Delta-Cardiff. The Forest Hill resident was 26 and had received a heart transplant in 2010, according to his obituary.
