Flood Watch Safety Tips: Harford County Emergency Officials

The Harford County Department of Emergency Services released a list of safety measures in the case of flooding.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — The Harford County Department of Emergency Services is warning county residents to take some safety measures as the flood warning remains, and more rain is in the forecast.

The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for most of Maryland until 8 a.m. Saturday, with a flash flood warning for Frederick. Localized areas of flooding of small streams and urban areas are possible Thursday through Saturday.

Here are the safety tips emergency officials want you to follow:

  • Pay attention to road closed signs and barricades and do not drive around them.
  • “Turn Around, Don’t Drown.” It is never safe to drive or try to walk through floodwaters.
  • If a traffic signal is out or flashing, treat the intersection as a four-way stop
  • Be familiar with areas that flood frequently and plan an alternate route.
  • Be aware of the potential for hydroplaning. During heavy rainfall, water can pool quickly on a road. At high speeds, even a small amount of water can cause a vehicle to lose traction and a driver can lose control of the vehicle.
