Tornado Watch Issued For Harford; Cancellations Announced

School activities and a county meeting have been impacted by the weather in Harford County, which is under two alerts.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — With multiple weather alerts issued as the remnants of Tropical Depression Ida soak the region, Harford County agencies have issued cancellations.

First the weather:

  • A tornado watch is in effect for Harford County and most of Maryland until 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 1. This means conditions are favorable for the development of tornadoes. People should monitor the weather and have a plan in case of a tornado warning. In case of a tornado, people should go inside to the basement or lowest floor of a sturdy building and move to an interior room away from windows.
  • A flash flood watch remains in effect until 8 a.m. on Thursday. About 1 to 3 inches of rain could fall Wednesday afternoon and evening, with localized amounts up to 5 inches possible. This may lead to "considerable flash flooding of creeks, small streams, and urban areas, but also the potential for river flooding on the main stem rivers," according to the National Weather Service.

Harford County Public Schools has encouraged staff to work virtually if possible Wednesday, Sept. 1. Schools and buildings closed at 11 a.m. Wednesday due to the impending storms. In addition, all athletics and extracurricular activities are canceled, and any travel for HCPS-sponsored events has been canceled.

Due to the inclement weather and expected worsening conditions, the Councilmanic Redistricting Commission meeting scheduled for Wednesday in Harford County has been canceled. The next redistricting commission meeting is at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 9
