BEL AIR, MD — The Harford County Health Department is reopening its vital records office. It has been closed since mid-March due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The Harford County Health Department's Office of Vital Records will reopen by appointment only Aug. 3.

Located at 120 South Hays Street, the office provides birth and death certificates.

Those who need documents are encouraged to download the birth certificate or death certificate from the website, fill it out and turn it in.

"Online scheduling of appointments is a new process for the health department, and we hope to be able to continue the process not only for Vital Records but for our other programs as well as we begin our reopening stage," Harford County Deputy Health Officer Marcy Austin said in a statement. "We look forward to welcoming the public back in person."

Here are the guidelines for visiting the health department at 120 South Hays Street:

  • Come alone.
  • Be on time. Visitors are given a five-minute grace period.
  • Stay in vehicle until summoned by staff.
  • Get screened.
  • Mask required.

Call 410-838-1500 and select option 1 to get guidance for making an online appointment.

Appointments are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday to Friday starting Aug. 3. They last for 15 minutes.
