Harford Man Charged In Deputy Assault: Sheriff

The man accused of fleeing a traffic stop on Interstate 95 and leading authorities on a chase in Edgewood faces drug and other charges.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — The man officials say drove away from a traffic stop Wednesday and injured a Harford County deputy is being held without bail, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office. He is now facing drug, assault and traffic charges.

Xavier Alexander Stanfield, 25, of the 100 block of Remington Circle in Havre de Grace, was arrested on Wednesday, March 20, near Hanson Square Drive and

Officials allege Stanfield drove away from a traffic stop on Interstate 95 and briefly dragged a Harford County sheriff's deputy, who sustained minor injuries. He was being stopped for traffic violations, according to Cristie Hopkins, spokeswoman for the Harford County Sheriff's Office.

Authorities said that the deputy was "able to immediately return to his vehicle and aid in the pursuit and arrest of Mr. Stanfield."

Stanfield was taken into custody near Hanson Road and Harford Square Drive after a brief car chase that ended when he got out and tried to run, the sheriff's office reported.

Authorities said that 226 grams of marijuana as well as suboxone were found in his vehicle. In addition, deputies said they seized more than $1,800 in cash.

Stanfield has been charged with these offenses:

  • First-degree assault
  • Second-degree assault on a law enforcement officer
  • Resisting arrest
  • Possession of more than 10 grams of marijuana
  • Possession of Schedule III drug (suboxone)
  • Possession with intent to distribute a schedule I drug (marijuana)

Multiple traffic charges are pending, according to the Harford County Sheriff's Office, such as fleeing and eluding, failing to remain at the scene of a crash involving property damage and other minor traffic offenses.

Stanfield is being held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center, officials reported Thursday, and Senior Deputy Robert Schultz "is doing well."
