Havre De Grace High School Educator Wins Community Service Award

A Harford County teacher has won the Association for Career & Technical Education MD Chapter's Carl Perkins Community Service Award.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Deanna Burch, a family and consumer sciences teacher at Havre de Grace High School, has won the Association for Career & Technical Education Maryland Chapter’s Carl Perkins Community Service Award.

The award is given to individuals who use CTE to make an impact on their community and demonstrate leadership in programs and activities that promote student involvement in community service.

In 2022, Burch's students provided treats and tea for visitors from their twin city of Mumbles, Wales. During the 2021-2022 school year, Burch was awarded a grant for the school greenhouse that allowed a plant-to-table program where students used these plants in their recipes.

Nearly every year since joining the staff at Havre de Grace High School, Burch continued the tradition of having high school students prepare stuffing for the community thanksgiving dinner. Through a local program, Burch was able to obtain enough ingredients for her students to bake loaves of bread for St. John’s Church food pantry on Fridays.
