Humane Society Opens New Building in Harford

The Humane Society of Harford County moves into newly constructed shelter in Fallston.

FALLSTON, MD – As they wait for their forever homes, animals living at the Humane Society of Harford County moved into bigger digs this week. The shelter officially opened the doors to its new facility on Connolly Road in Fallston at 11 a.m. on Monday.

The newly constructed 19,000-square-foot building located near the old shelter allows for more modern living situations for the thousands of animals who come through the doors each year.

Since 1946, the shelter had been operating out of a former farmhouse that was more than 100 years old.

Its age showed through less-than-optimal conditions, such as paint peeling off the walls, a broken boiler and leaky roof, according to Fox 45.

In addition, the new facility has double the number of dog kennels than its predecessor, WBAL reported, although the TV station noted the shelter's residents have dwindled in numbers in recent days thanks to an effort to get animals adopted so they would not have to undergo the stress of moving.

As a result of the "Empty Our Shelter" campaign last week, in which adoption fees were waived for animals older than 7 months, the organization reported it had 59 adoptions.

There were 11 cats and seven dogs up for adoption as of Tuesday morning, Marketing Coordinator Erin Long told Patch.

The pets awaiting their forever homes have since moved into the new facility.

"Good morning from the animals who woke up for the first time this morning in the new building!" the Humane Society of Harford County posted on its Facebook page Monday morning.

Those who want to meet the animals up for adoption should go in person.

"Our phones are not working yet and it may be several days before they do," the Humane Society of Harford said Monday. "Please bear with us during this transition as we're working very hard to be 100% operational this week."

The Humane Society of Harford County is located at 2208 Connolly Road in Fallston. Hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday to Friday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday; and noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday.
