I-95 Traffic Pattern In Harford County Shifts

Lanes will be split on Interstate 95 north, with three to the left and one to the right at the exit for MD 24.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — A new traffic pattern began this week on Interstate 95 in Harford County as crews work on the highway between the exits for MD 152 and MD 24. The project affects I-95 north.

The highway will be divided, with three lanes to the left and one lane to the right, split by a concrete barrier, according to the Maryland Transportation Authority.

Those who want to get to MD 24 should stay to the right of the barrier, while those who want to take MD 924 or remain on I-95 should remain to the left of the barrier, officials say.

Through June, the barrier will divide the highway so authorities can add an auxiliary lane connecting the MD 152 on-ramp with the MD 24 off-ramp, according to authorities, who say the 8,200-foot auxiliary lane will create "better traffic operations and a safer transition."

Officials say I-95 will be resurfaced in the area during the project, which is part of the Express Toll Lanes Northbound Extension between MD 43 and MD 24.

Drivers should travel off-peak and plan ahead, according to authorities.

"When the COVID-19 state of emergency is lifted and normal traffic returns to Maryland roads, traffic delays are typical in this area during afternoon peak periods, and particularly on summer Friday afternoons and evenings as Marylanders travel for weekend events," the Maryland Transportation Authority said in a statement. "On average, motorists historically experience northbound Friday afternoon delays with queues up to nine miles, with travel delays up to 20 minutes."
