Killow Deel, 94, Former Bel Air Courthouse Guard

A family man who lived a life of service, he reportedly worked into his 80s at the courthouse in Bel Air.

Killow Harden Charles “Kig” “Jerry” Deel passed away Jan. 2, 2019. He died surrounded by loved ones in his home at the age of 94.

Deel was one of nine children born in the Appalachian Mountains in Grundy, Virginia, and he went on to serve during World War II in the Philippines as a telephone and telegraph lineman. After an honorable discharge, he worked at the Edgewood Arsenal and served as a guard at the courthouse in Bel Air into his 80s, according to his obituary.

He is survived by his wife of nearly 70 years and four of their five children, as well as their seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren and one great-grandchild on the way. He was predeceased by one of his children and six of his siblings, his obituary said.

Visitation and a service were held on Saturday, Jan. 5, at McComas Funeral Home in Abingdon. His final resting place will be at Bel Air Memorial Gardens, 809 Rock Spring Road, Bel Air.
