Landfill Fees on the Rise Across Harford County

The County Council approved the increase last week.

The County Council voted last week to increase solid waste disposal fees across the board. will take effect July 1.

Deputy Director of Environmental Services Thomas Hilton told the council that the county would lose a projected $2.4 million in fiscal year 2012 and $3.3 million in fiscal year 2013 if it continued charging the current prices.

Hilton added that the increases are necessary “so that we become more self-sufficient and we no longer have to rely on our general fund.”

The county could also cut back in recycling advertising and litter control to save money.

Home recycling from the end of September to December 2010 was up between 30–35 percent, and county officials expect that number to continue to increase.
