Lightning Sparks Fire In Joppa Home's Attic Causing $150K In Damage: MD Fire Marshal
Lightning struck a Joppa home Saturday, sparking a fire in the attic and causing $150K in damage, according to the State Fire Marshal.
HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Saturday's storms that rolled through the area likely sparked a house fire shortly before 5 p.m. in Joppa.
Approximately 50 volunteer firefighters from Joppa Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company and seven surrounding companies responded to a one-alarm house fire at 1611 Riverwood Circle in Joppa. Firefighters arrived to find the two-story, single family home with flames coming out of the attic.
The homeowner was present when he heard a loud "boom" sound, according to the Maryland Office of the State Fire Marshal. They believe it was a lightning strike, the fire marshal reported, that sparked a fire in the attic. The homeowner found heavy smoke in the attic, called 911 and left.

Firefighters were able to contain the fire to the attic. Extensive smoke, water and related fire damage affected the first and second floors of the home.
One firefighter was injured and taken to MedStar Franklin Square Medical Center by emergency workers in stable condition.

The two adult residents are being assisted by family and friends. The fire caused an estimated $150,000 in damages to the structure and contents of the home.
