Local Family Hosting March 9 Fundraiser for 1p36 Deletion Support & Awareness

March 9 fundraiser for special needs kids at JDs Smokehouse featuring Stella & Dot jewelry, drink specials, and raffles

Scott and Jennifer Winiecki, of Churchville, had never heard of 1p36 Deletion Syndrome when their daughter Wendy was diagnosed with it when she was 4 months old.

Wendy is now 8 and a fighter, living life to the fullest. And her parents are now hosting the 11th Annual 1p36 Deletion Support and Awareness Conference in Baltimore this August.

On March 9, 2017, Wendy's family and friends will host a Stella & Dot Fundraiser and raffle at JD's Smokehouse Bel Air from 5 to 8 p.m. to benefit the 1p36 Deletion Support & Awareness Conference.

1p36 is a little known and often misunderstood disorder affecting 1 in 5,000 births. It is characterized by moderate to severe intellectual disability, delayed growth, seizures, limited speech ability, malformations, hearing and vision impairment, and distinct facial features. Not every child has every symptom but all have significant disabilities.

According to Jennifer Winiecki, conference hosts are asked to raise money to put on the conference.

"I was very touched when my neighbor, Maureen DeVido, who is a Stella & Dot consultant, approached me and told me she was interested in doing a fundraiser for us at JD's Smokehouse," Winiecki said. "I thought it was a great idea and something fun for the community." DeVido plans to donate her Stella & Dot commission to 1p36 Deletion Support & Awareness.

The idea took off from there. JD's Smokehouse is planning on running drink specials and there will also be a raffle for items DeVido has gotten donated from Scentsy, Lularoe, ThirtyOne bags, Jamberry Nails, Tastefully Simple, Lipsense, Usborne books and local businesses.

1p36 Deletion Support & Awareness is a national non-profit organization that is 100% volunteer-led. The DSA goal is to provide support and education to families affected by this chromosome abnormality. Any money raised on March 9 will go directly to supporting conference activities.

Please come out to JD's Smokehouse to support Wendy, her family, and 1p36 Deletion Support & Awareness from 5 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, March 9, at JD's Smokehouse, 2235 E. Churchville Rd., Bel Air, MD 21015.
