BWI Adds New Low-Fare Airline to the Mix

Starting in spring 2016, Allegiant will fly to five destinations not currently available to BWI passengers.

BWI Thurgood Marshall International Airport has landed a new carrier.

The low-fare Allegiant Air will begin flying out of BWI this spring, offering round-trip service to six destinations, only one of which is currently accessible from the airport:

  • Cincinnati (year-round service starts April 29)
  • Savannah, Ga./Hilton Head, S.C. (year-round service starts April 29)
  • Asheville, N.C. (seasonal service starts May 19)
  • Knoxville, Tenn. (seasonal service starts May 20)
  • Lexington, Ky. (seasonal service starts June 3)
  • Tulsa, Okla. (seasonal service starts May 19)

Of the six cities, Cincinnati is the only one to which BWI currently offers service.

One-way tickets are $39 from BWI to the six cities where Allegiant will fly, according to the latest fares listed.

The airline typically offers two to four flights a week to its destinations, not daily trips, according to USA Today.

While some cities such as Tulsa are starting out as seasonal destinations with two trips a week, the demand reportedly will dictate whether additional flights—and year-round service—will be added.

“Allegiant will help grow tourism in our market, while adding low airfares and new destinations for our local travelers,” BWI’s Chief Executive Officer Ricky Smith said in a statement.

BWI is already booming; July 2015 was the busiest month in its history, according to the statement.

Allegiant is also spreading its wings.

Baltimore is one of three new cities that Allegiant will be flying to this year, the company announced Tuesday. The other two are Destin, Fla, and El Paso, Texas, according to Allegiant, which has a presence in 100 U.S. markets.

“Allegiant is excited to begin service at BWI Marshall Airport...” Allegiant Senior Vice president of Planning Jude Bricker said. “We also look forward to entering the market and showing local travelers Allegiant’s unique brand of ultra-low-cost travel.”
