At 8:55 a.m., the Joppa-Magnolia Volunteer Fire Company reported that the school had been evacuated and its crew was investigating a burning odor at the middle school building in the 200 block of Fort Hoyle Road.

Despite the fire department clearing the building for the return of students and staff, the power did not come back on. As a result of the power outage, officials said students were being dismissed early.
