Man Endures 7 Surgeries In 7 Days After Motorcycle Crash, GoFundMe Created

A Harford County man originally in critical condition after being t-boned while driving his motorcycle has undergone 7 surgeries in 7 days.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — Life changed forever in late June when Kevin Peters was riding his motorcycle northbound on Route 40 through Edgewood and suddenly was t-boned by a Lincoln Navigator making a U-turn.

Not only was Peters' bike crushed, but it had to be "mechanically removed from his body," according to his sister, Samantha Peters.

In that crash, Kevin Peters sustained several serious injuries, including a fractured skull and epidural hematoma, an open fracture of his tibia and fibula, a broken heel, a broken ankle and a hand broken in three places. Doctors were able to drain the blood from his brain and relieve the pressure, plus he was intubated and placed on a ventilator.

"Thankfully, the bleeding has stopped and his brain is slowly repositioning itself back to normal," his sister posted on a GoFundMe she created to support her brother's medical needs. "Thanks to the grace of God and the amazing staff at Johns Hopkins, he is still in critical care but is starting to stabilize. He has undergone several surgeries in the past few days and still has several more upcoming as the surgeons focus on reconstructing his leg. They are hopeful they will be able to restore his ability to walk. Once he is past this critical phase, he will have many months of intense rehabilitation where he will have to learn to walk, use his hand and regain his independence."

Samantha Peters established the GoFundMe to help support her brother's recovery and pay his medical bills. She said he works full time and "is one of the hardest working and kindest people we know."

"He is loved and cherished by friends and family. Kevin rarely asks for help, but now we need to ask for it. We’re doing everything we can to help his recovery, but the costs ahead are overwhelming. Even with insurance and legal action underway, the financial burden far exceeds what is covered," Peters wrote.

All donations will go toward Kevin Peters' immediate and future surgeries, ICU stays, scans and imaging, short-term and long-term rehabilitation, mobility aids and home modifications, legal costs and associate living expenses, as well as lost wages during recovery.

"If we are blessed enough to receive more donations than he needs, additional funds will go to support Kevin’s long term disability or a similar cause," his sister wrote.

As of July 25, his condition has been downgraded from critical care to medical surgical/stabilized care. He's underwent seven surgeries in seven days including brain and skull surgeries, had pins placed in his left hand, his left ankle and left foot, has been taken off intubation and can breathe on his own. Samantha Peters said he's able to talk, is awake and aware.

"Luckily for us ... (he) has maintained his sense of humor. Kevin is surprising us and his healthcare providers with how quickly he is recovering, but he's not out of the woods yet. He is still in a tremendous amount of pain and has several more leg reconstruction surgeries ahead of him, which all carry a serious amount of risk. Kevin and our family are incredibly grateful for your support and prayers," she wrote.
