MVA Launches Self-Service Emissions Tests in Bel Air

Drivers can do their own emissions tests now at nine Motor Vehicle Administration locations statewide, including in Harford County.

BEL AIR, MD – Drivers who need to get their emissions tested can now do it themselves in Bel Air, with the addition of a self-service kiosk at the Bel Air branch of the Motor Vehicle Administration (MVA).

The kiosk on MacPhail Road is one of seven being added to MVA locations statewide after Glen Burnie and Gaithersburg tested the kiosks starting in August 2015, according to a statement from the MVA.

“These popular kiosks provide customers a quick and easy way to complete their vehicle’s emissions test," MVA Administrator Christine Nizer said in a statement. “The governor challenged us to make our services more convenient and less expensive, and we’ve delivered with the expansion of the self-service VEIP kiosks.”

Testing done by a technician at full-service locations costs $14. With the self-service kiosks, the cost is $10. To do it, drivers plug the testing device into their vehicles and follow instructions on the kiosk display. See a demonstration.

The Vehicle Emission Inspection Program (VEIP) self-service kiosks are now at the following locations, the MVA reported Tuesday:

The emissions test is required every two years to ensure that vehicle engines are working properly and meet the clean air standards set by the Maryland Department of the Environment.

Vehicles that are past their inspection dates have to go to a full-service VEIP location for testing, MVA officials say.
