Preserving Mama’s Breastfeeding Memory with Precious Mammaries
Baltimore stay-at-home mother creates stunning jewelry made from... breast milk!

Breastfeeding for many mothers is not just a method for feeding our babies, but it is an emotional bonding experience to be treasured for a lifetime. Whether we choose to nurse for a year or more, that time is still relatively short compared to the whole life of a child. That moment disappears in the blink of an eye, no matter how it seems like our babies take forever to grow up or finish nursing!
Many of us mothers want to remember that short and sweet time breastfeeding our little ones with something tangible, something we can wear around us all the time as a visible symbol of our hard work, endurance, patience, and most of all love. This is where breast milk jewelry from Precious Mammaries comes in.

Precious Mammaries is a DNA keepsake store started by Rachel Lé Char, a creative stay-at-home mother of a toddler from Baltimore, Maryland. Rachel says, “I was overcome by an overwhelming sense of passion to create once I carried my first born in my womb. I started making jewelry from organic materials such as plants and leather while pregnant. Once my baby girl was born and I started experiencing the joy of breastfeeding with her, the use of organic materials naturally transitioned to the use of breast milk in my jewelry work.”

Although breast milk is the most popular material requested from Rachel’s jewelry, Precious Mammaries also makes use of other organic materials such as placenta from dried encapsulated pills, baby’s first lock of hair, baby’s first tooth, and ashes from loved ones or a beloved pet.

Besides jewelry, the store also carries beautifully hand crafted soaps made from breast milk with yummy varieties to choose from such as honey and oats. All of the soaps are formulated to be safe for both baby’s and mommy’s skin and are made from non-GMO and organic natural ingredients. For the moms who are no longer lactating or have run out of their milk stash, some of the soaps have no milk but are just nice to have to pamper oneself after a busy day! There’s also soap for increasing milk supply and even a soap made for relieving mastitis!
Who breast milk jewelry or DNA keepsakes are for
Breastfeeding mothers or mothers who just weaned their babies from breastfeeding often buy breast milk jewelry for themselves or have their husbands purchase it for them as a reward for their sacrifice. Some moms who may want breast milk jewelry too are those who are unable to breastfeed directly but are able to express milk through pumping or are recipients of donor milk.
Mothers who are not lactating can also just purchase jewelry made with their baby’s first lock of hair or tooth, or even her dried placenta from leftover pills. Instead of putting these materials in a box stored somewhere, incorporating them in jewelry is more of a practical and elegant way to keep memories with her.
DNA keepsakes are not just for mothers. If you’ve lost a loved one or a pet, any of the jewelry pieces from Precious Mammaries can also be made with ashes.

The Preservation process
So the question is, how does breast milk jewelry work? How do you get the milk in there? Although Precious Mammaries’ work process is mostly proprietary, one thing that’s for sure is that the milk gets preserved into stone to prevent mold or discoloration that inevitably happens with any organic or natural material. “Milk is food and also part of nature, and just like everything else in this category, it withers. However, natural material, when preserved right, can last a lifetime. This is what I do with mothers’ breast milk and other DNA material for jewelry making” says Rachel.
Timeless jewelry pieces ranging from simply everyday pieces to more elegant pieces can be found in Precious Mammaries’ store. Rachel says, “There’s definitely something there for every taste and occasion, because I want moms of all types to be able to find something they will just fall in love with instantly and long enough for them to treasure it forever.”

Whether you find the idea of preserving milk to be worn with you forever weird or not, there is certainly something to be said about the magical bonding experience around breastfeeding that most mothers want to keep in their memories forever. Many of our own mothers, grandmothers, and great grandmothers traditionally kept their children’s hair and teeth! Some mothers just want a tangible token to keep and pass on, and DNA keepsakes is the answer to that.
The play on words with Precious Mammaries name surely lives up to its most popular product, breast milk jewelry. It’s worth checking out, and if you love it enough, get one for yourself or a mother you love!
