Rare Find Discovered In The Water At Winters Run River In Harford County

A rare discovery was made in a corbicula clam at Winters Run River in Harford County recently, reports the Maryland DNR.

HARFORD COUNTY, MD — A rare find in the waters off Harford County has been reported by the Maryland Department of Natural Resources. A couple of sixth and seventh grade students were at Winters Run River when they discovered a pearl in a freshwater clam.

According to the Maryland DNR's Facebook page, corbicula is a non-native clam in Maryland waters, but like all clams, it can produce pearls.

"This is obviously very rare, so these kids got lucky," the DNR stated.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the corbicula fluminea clam is more commonly known as the Asian clam and are native to tropical southern Asia west to the eastern Mediterranean; Africa except in the Sahara Desert and southeast Asian Island south into central and eastern Australia.
