Bel Air School Bus Driver Cited After Crash: Police

Two were injured when a bus from Harford County Public Schools was involved in a crash near Bel Air on Wednesday morning, officials said.

BEL AIR, MD — A school bus driver was cited as the result of a crash Wednesday morning that sent him and one other driver to area hospitals, police said. Four students and an adult aide were aboard the bus at the time of the collision, and officials reported none of them was injured.

Based on the preliminary investigation, police said the school bus was making a left turn from southbound Rock Spring Road onto Moores Mill Road when the bus crashed head-on with a car. Part of Moores Mill Road was closed due to construction, officials said.

The crash happened around 8:15 a.m. on Wednesday, May 22, according to Rich Gardiner, spokesman for the Harford County Volunteer Fire and EMS Association, who said there was entrapment as a result.

One person from the bus and one person from the car were taken to area hospitals with injuries that were not believed to be life-threatening, Gardiner said.

Henry Woods, 73, was taken by ambulance to the University of Maryland Upper Chesapeake Medical Center for treatment of his injuries, according to Maryland State Police.

Woods, who had been driving the school bus, was being cited for failing to yield to an oncoming vehicle, police said.

Dorthy Hagen, 76, of Bel Air, who had been driving the car, was taken by ambulance to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

Harford County Public Schools provided another bus for the students and aide after the crash, which remains under investigation by the Maryland State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division. The Bel Air Police Department and Harford County Sheriff’s Office also assisted at the scene, officials reported.

It's the second school bus involved in a crash in Harford County this week. Another crash happened on Grier Nursery Road on Thursday, May 16. That collision occurred in the afternoon, and nobody was injured.
