Severe Thunderstorm Watch Scaled Back To One County In MD

The National Weather Service placed much of Maryland under a severe thunderstorm watch Wednesday then narrowed its scope.

MARYLAND — After issuing a severe thunderstorm watch for 15 jurisdictions across Maryland, the National Weather Service scaled back its watch area Wednesday night.

The severe thunderstorm watch is in effect until 9 p.m. for parts of northeastern Maryland, weather officials reported before 7 p.m.

Cecil County remains under the severe thunderstorm watch.

An excessive heat watch takes effect from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday.

"Dangerously hot conditions" may drive heat indices from 105 degrees west of I-95 to 110 degrees east of I-95, according to the National Weather Service.

"Extreme heat and humidity will significantly increase the potential for heat-related illnesses, particularly for those working or participating in outdoor activities," the weather service advised.

EXPIRED: Much of Maryland is under a severe thunderstorm watch Wednesday afternoon. The National Weather Service issued the watch at 2 p.m., and it remains in effect until 9 p.m.

During a severe thunderstorm watch, conditions are favorable for a severe thunderstorm, which is defined as storm with more than 58 mph wind and/or hail 1 inch in diameter or larger.

UPDATE: Severe Thunderstorm Warnings Posted Across MD

A special marine warning was issued around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday after line of strong thunderstorms was detected from the Gunpowder River to west of Middle River to the Key Bridge, according to the National Weather Service. The warning is in effect until 6:30 p.m.

Radar indicated winds greater than 34 knots or greater, and boaters in small crafts could be thrown overboard, officials said. These areas may be impacted: Fort Smallwood State Park, Turkey Point, North Point State Park, Hart Miller Island, Chester River, Gibson Island, Bodkin Point, Tolchester Beach, Worton Point, Pooles Island, Spesutie Island, Love Point, Gunpowder River, Sandy Point State Park, Baltimore Light, Severn River, Northeast River, Sevenfoot Knoll, Kent Narrows Bridge and Pinehurst.

A hazardous weather outlook for the region states that isolated thunderstorms are possible Wednesday afternoon and night with damaging winds, large hail and isolated cases of flash flooding.

In addition, most of the state is under a heat advisory until 8 p.m. Wednesday and an excessive heat watch from noon to 8 p.m. Thursday.
